Sharon Cameron has had extensive experience working with both neurotypical and neurodiverse children in a variety of settings. She works closely with her co-therapist Artemis (Arte), a Certified Therapy Dog.
Sharon’s warmth, compassion and calm, soothing energy draw children to her, enabling a deep affinity and rapport and creating a trusting, open and positive experience for the children in her care. Arte plays an important role, too, in helping reduce anxiety, tension, and stress hormones, and of course, helping children to feel less isolated and alone. Arte completed her Certification as a Therapy Dog at Lead the Way Institute.
Sharon is currently the School Counsellor at Galilee Catholic Primary School in South Melbourne. She graduated from The Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors, majoring in Abuse Counselling, Mindfulness-Based Theories and Grief and Loss Counselling. Sharon has also completed a Certificate in Mindfulness and Wellbeing for Children and is an accredited facilitator of the Peaceful Kids Program.
Sharon is passionate about supporting children to develop lifelong skills and strategies for dealing with anxiety and other emotional or behavioural difficulties. She is dedicated to developing the social and emotional wellbeing of young people through one-on-one counselling and facilitated group sessions.
Through Peaceful Kids, Seasons for Growth, LEGO® Based therapy and Social Skills programs, Sharon has helped numerous children to develop positive mental health and wellbeing, building resilience and self-confidence to cope with everyday stresses and developing coping strategies that set them up for life.
The Covid pandemic has highlighted the importance of providing children with strategies to lessen anxiety and build resilience. Empowering children with coping strategies and the belief that they can deal with whatever challenges they are faced with enables them to grow into confident, resilient adults.
I believe that when a child is engaged, the learning begins. Children need to feel safe and connected enough to be comfortable to ‘sit in' those big feelings with the knowledge that they have the tools to cope.
I’ve seen the many benefits that mindfulness and solution focused strategies can have for children and I look forward to working with my community to make a difference in the lives of children, parents and families..
